AVOID NEW YEAR’s RESOLUTIONS, INSTEAD TRY THIS…
It’s that time of year again, the annual inaccurate goal setting day! So many people make New Year’s Resolutions only to make them again the next year. STOP THE MADNESS! Instead of making the same old tiring goal you did the last few years take this approach instead.
Make 24-hour resolutions. Chunk down the goal setting process by hyper focusing on 24-hour chunks. Instead of making a New Year’s Resolution to lose 20 pounds, start the business you’ve been wanting to do, or make Varsity, ask yourself this question, “What can I do in the next 24-hours to get me closer to my ultimate goal?”
This question will force you to stay focused on the present and take specific actions that will ultimately help you in accomplishing your ultimate goal. Your ultimate goal should be some large-scale result that you would like to achieve. Now, that might be losing 20 pounds or starting your business or making Varsity, but your process cannot end there. If you want to achieve your ultimate goal you must make the 24-hour resolution your primary priority this year.
Follow these 3 steps every day if you want to have the most successful year and accomplish all your ultimate goals.
Choose an ultimate goal
Every evening before going to bed write down your answer to THE 24-HOUR RESOLUTION question:
What am I going to do in the next 24-hours to get me closer to (insert ultimate goal here)?
Take action! You have 24 hours to do whatever you said you would do, so before your 24 hours are up, check if you did what you said you would do.
IF YOU DID, then write down 2 things you did in the last 24 hours that you are grateful for and then write down your response to the next 24-hour resolution question.
IF YOU DID NOT, write down what obstacles/circumstances prevent you from taking this action. These can be anything from pure laziness, unexpected work, lack of motivation, some sort of emergency, etc. Whatever kept you from doing it write it down in detail. Then write down 2 things you did in the last 24 hours that you are grateful for. Once you have written that down, proceed to write down your response to the 24-hour resolution question and add 1-2 specific actions you will take to avoid the obstacles/circumstances again. (For example, if you my obstacle was unexpected work, I could write down that I am going to wake up 30 minutes earlier so I can accomplish my 24-hour resolution before I get to work so I know it is done.)
